Vanny Vern, age nineteen, was born into a poor, Buddhist family. His father was an alcoholic and his mother was one of his father’s three wives. At eight years old, his mother and father divorced causing his father to spend more time with Vanny’s half-brothers and half-sisters than with him. Vanny only recalls using the word “dad” a few times because his father was never a big part of his life. Vanny became very jealous of his siblings as he longed to have a relationship with his father.
Vanny’s troubled home life and poverty made it difficult for him to do well in school. As a result, his relatives considered sending him to the temple. Another relative had heard of Asian Hope and they decided to send him there instead.
When Vanny arrived at Asian Hope he met many other boys and girls that had come from similar situations. At Asian Hope he felt loved and proud to be a part of the home. He has two younger blood-brothers that live at the Boy’s Home, too. He has also made new ‘brothers’ and ‘sisters’ at Asian Hope that he does not have to be jealous of, but instead can love and help grow into leaders.
Vanny was a part of the first high school graduating class from Logos on May 23rd, 2008! He hopes to become a businessman so he can help the economy of Cambodia. Enrolling into Mission College in Thailand was another step in allowing him to fulfill that vision.
Read more about Vanny in the July 2008 and March 2009 newsletters.
