Tirua was born into a family that lived in a small province with little opportunity. His parents and siblings lived in a small shack hoping to have at least some rice throughout the day. He was a good student in the 1st and 2nd grades. However, shortly thereafter his mother and oldest brother both died. As a result, his desire to learn decreased and his ability to attend school became impossible as he spent all his time struggling to survive. All his dreams and hopes were gone.
Tirua grew up with his family serving Buddha and was afraid of other gods. During the fear and confusion following his mother and brother’s deaths, Tirua now sees that God was not far away. As a result of the family deaths, a neighboring family began to care for Tirua and his siblings. This family was a missionary family. They were able to provide for the physical needs of Tirua and his family. After God used these people to heal Tirua from a physical pain he was experiencing, he strongly desired to know this God. Shortly after this family began to care for Tirua and his siblings, God opened the doors for them to go to Asian Hope.
While at Asian Hope, Tirua and his siblings were educated about Jesus Christ and how He died for our shortcomings and sins. It was during this time that Tirua accepted Jesus as his Savior and began to learn more about Him…and he began to dream again.
Tirua has since been able to dream big! He dreams of becoming an architect and helping to lead his country in the name of Christ. He has had to opportunity to visit the States on many occasions and even interned with the president of an architectural company, Mark Hoskins, this past summer. He is currently a Sophomore at Moody Bible College in Chicago. Please pray for Tirua as he continues to have a dream to help Cambodia, and to do it for God!
Read more about Tirua in the October 2008 newsletter and in the asianhope.org news article “Everybody’s Big Brother.”
