Socheatha was born in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. She has one older brother and one younger sister. She and her sister lived alone with her mother who worked night and day to provide food for them. One day, when Socheatha was about 11 years old, her mother left for work and said she would be back soon. Socheatha woke up in the middle of the night and her mom was still not home. She never came home that night. As the night turned to day, she remembers telling her sister that mom would be home soon to provide food for them. The answer that kept coming back to her was that her mom would never leave them alone and she would return. A few months passed but her mom never showed up.
For two years Socheatha and her sister lived alone in their shack. When it would rain there was only a small place to lay their heads because of all the holes in the roof, and the shack smelled like trash. They continued to go to church because they needed the food and money the church provided them, but that was the only reason they went.
One day a missionary told Socheatha about a new orphanage that opened. The missionary took her and her sister there so they could have someone supervise and take care of them. Socheatha was so mad at God for the life He gave her. She remembered that every night after devotions she would sit on the balcony and talk to God. She asked God to show Himself to her. Indeed He did! The next day during devotions Socheatha began to weep as they sang the song “Jesus We Enthroned You”. She felt like the spirit of God poured down on her. That night, Socheatha became a believer.
Socheatha lived in the orphanage for seven years and began to love the new “family” that God gave to her. She was the first child to attend Front Range Christian School in Colorado. She has learned that her country has a great need for nurses and doctors. Now in her sJunior year at Liberty University in Virginia, she is studying to become a nurse and possibly become a doctor one day! Her vision, upon returning to Cambodia after graduation, is to have an Ambulance Ministry; traveling to villages throughout Cambodia providing basic medical needs from an ambulance and sharing the gospel with them.
