Chendamony (Chenda) is one of the many success stories that Logos has witnessed over the past four years. Chenda, an honor roll student in grade nine, comes from a poor farming area outside of Phnom Penh. Although her father once drove for dignitaries, their family lost everything during the rule of the Khmer Rouge. Unable to receive an education in the countryside, Chenda left her parent’s home to live with her brother in a squatter district of Phnom Penh in order to attend a local school. However, the “home” that she had moved to was little more than a 100 square foot shack with a dirt floor. It housed eight others. Rats, fleas and other such pests were simply a part of daily life. Living and attempting to study in such conditions, presented daily challenges. However, this would all change when Bonnie Blackard, a teacher at Logos, invited Chenda to live with her. In addition to being given a safe, clean home, Chenda was also given a full scholarship at Logos. This extremely positive and intelligent young lady has made the most of her opportunities and has become one of the top students in her class. Recently, Chenda has been able to move in with one of her older sisters, and her future, which was bleak and hopeless, is looking very bright.
